We have a programme here at Griffith (address: Nathan, Brisbane, 4111, Qld., Australia), which involves majors in the Faculty of Science and Technology in STS and in the Faculty of Humanities in HPS. I give a brief description of each. Both majors require 6 subjects, where 4 subjects are a normal semester load in a three year (6 semester) degree. The two faculties mentioned above do not have the resources to mount 6 subjects on their own, hence they 'borrow' 2. That is to say, the HPS major comprises the 4 Humanities subjects and 2 from science. The scientists have a little more choice, as they can 'borrow' from the Faculty of Environmental Science as well as from Humanities. The subjects offered by Science are: Biosciences, Medicine and Society; Science, Technology and the Modern Industrial State; Science, Ethics and Values; Science, Technology and Underdevelopment. By Humanities, they are: Scientific Institutions; The Mechanical World View; The Darwinian Revolution; The Nature of Science. All of these are 'upper level', i.e. Second and Third Year, subjects. There is also an STS subject in First Year Science. There is a proposal to combine the above subject with some from Envrionmental Science and offer a B.Phil. in STS/HPS, which may be successful for next year.
