Edinburgh University offer both Masters level and doctoral opportunities in science and technology studies. 1 The Faculty of Social Sciences offers a MSC IN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY STUDIES. This is open to interested graduates from any discipline, and involves two terms of specialist course work followed by a supervised dissertation. Term one provides 'core' courses on the Sociology of Scientific Knowledge and on Social and Economic Perspectives on Technology. In term two, students then choose from courses on The Politics of Science and Technology; the Social Shaping of Information and Communication Technologies; Sociology of Risk and the Environment; Gender, Science and Technology; the Management of Technology; and the Management of R&D and Product Innovation. More general social science courses are also available. 2 The Faculty of Social Sciences offers a DOCTORAL PROGRAMME OF SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC RESEARCH ON TECHNOLOGY. This interdisciplinary programme provides an opportunity to conduct in-depth social science research on technology. It is underpinned by a strong base of related research at Edinburgh, and students may be supervised by from Departments across the Social Sciences Faculty. Current areas of expertise include: technology and organisations; the generation and implementation of information technology; the sociology of computing; innovation policy and management; gender, science and technology; technology collaboration. In the first two terms of the programme, students follow relevant MSc courses (see 1 above), and receive practical training in research methods and design. 3 The Science Studies Unit offers the opportunity to do doctoral research in the SOCIOLOGY, HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY OF SCIENCE AND MEDICINE. The Unit has a longstanding reputation in the field of science studies and a growing expertise in the study of medicine; there are now 5 teaching staff available for supervision. In the first two terms of the programme, students follow relevant MSc courses (see 1 above), and receive practical training in research methods and design. NB It is not too late to apply for 1995/6.
